SOCOM 3: US Navy SEALs

SOCOM 3: US Navy Seals is a great addition to the series, and a wonderful fare thee well to playstation 2. There are a lot of new features and improvements over the past:

New features:
# 32 players instead of 16
# vehicles allow you to move faster -- tanks, bradleys, trucks, Humvees, boats
# swimming: You can't fire your gun from in the water, but you can submerge yourself for a limited time, making you all but invisible.
# larger maps (5 to 6 times larger)
# more than 900 weapon combinations
# Returning modes include Breach, Demolition, Suppression, Escort, and Extraction. The new modes are Control and Convoy.
# addition of Encumbrance (weight vs. speed)

The single player is a good primer for the online mayhem, but that's all it is. You can get immersed in the larger settings, but if you want to really have fun, you need to go online and get ready to be fragged by that 12 year old hiding in the corner.

The online experience can be frustrating, but fun if you know what you're doing.
# 32 players drop the framerate
# clan structure is intact, so god bless to the newbies
# Often times you have to deal with the whining and moaning of the punks and generally obnoxious. But you can always ignore them (or just take off the headset).

At the end of the day, if you liked SOCOM 2, you'll love the improvements in SOCOM 3. The multiplayer aspect can be brutal, but is worth the experience. Driving your humvee while your partners take out any and all targets in the area can make for a great ride.

In case you don't want to buy, you can always rent SOCOM 3 at gamefly.com.
