Beverage warmer

Beverage Warmer

The beverage warmer is just what I need in the morning. When I have to walk away for a few minutes to do whatever, when I come back, my coffee is still hot. There are two settings: warm and hot. Large enought to use it with your soup bowl, too.

SSX TV Snowboard Game Plug n Play

It's a Plug 'n play TV Snowboard game I saw at I want one of those. Instead of playing with your console controller, you can actually 'ride' a snowboard down the slopes. You move/lean right and your character moves right. There are four games: Show Off, Time Challenge, Pipedream and Tokyo Megaplex.

"The graphics, gameplay and the legendary SSX characters are based on EA's #1 selling SSX video game, so you can cruise SSX courses as SSX Characters, catch insane air and land massive tricks (er...man). So get off the sofa and onto the slopes!

This product is not suitable for shipping to the USA

* Based on EA's #1 selling SSX video game
* Ride the snowboard to control the action on the TV
* All you need is a TV or VCR with AV inputs (RF adapter required if your TV or VCR does not have AV inputs)"

Ride on air

This car literally rides on air. Instead of a gasoline engine, they have created an engine that runs off of compressed air. They claim it can go 200 km a day, reach speeds of 220 km/h, the oil will only need to be changed every 50,000 km, and you get free air conditioning by redirecting the exhaust. And of course, there's no pollution.

BTW, 200 km is about 125 miles.

To make it more useful, the engine can be equipped to be a hybrid motor, so that when the air runs out, you can run off of fossil fuels. Thus making the car more likely to be accepted.

Mind you, I think they're going to have to make it look a little bit nicer before they can market it in the US.

Student satellite launch a success

It seems that students in Europe have successfully launched a rocket into space, carrying satellites for China, Iran, and the UK-funded Topsat, an Earth observation microsatellite. Work was done by students located at 23 universities. They were able to collabarate using the internet.

Fuel cell for your camera?

Wouldn't that be nice. There's a story on how Canon is working on powering a future generation of digital cameras using fuel cells. The advantage to fuel cells, rather than rechargeable batteries, is two-fold. The first advantage is fuel cells would last a lot longer. The second is time to recharge, since all you would need to do is refuel, rather than recharge.

But don't expect it to be on the store shelves next week. While the engineers have a working copy, it's big, bulky and would be extremely expensive at this point. But they are working on it.

Laser shock tanks

What I love about the description here is the warning that this is not a toy.

The ULTIMATE in desktop or floor duelling, two tanks poised ready for battle....

Dual power ( high shock or low shock) can you take a hit?

Each time your opponent scores a hit on your remote control tank you will receive a shock through your remote control, but the good news is, if you get him first, he gets the blast!

WICKED!

(Please note: This item is NOT recommended for children under 14 years of age. Read warning panel on item before use. This is not a toy)

Clean sweep

Lawn SweeperIf I had the extra cash I would buy this in a second. Especially since I spent half of my weekend raking leaves. The worst part about raking leaves is I know that I'm not done. I'll just have to get back out there and do it again next weekend. And the weekend after that... Also, It's a lot easier to use than those noisy leaf blowers.

Just push and give your lawn a clean sweep with no bending or back strain. No more repetitive raking and needless stooping to pick up leaves, grass clippings and lawn debris. Just roll along with this lawn sweeper and leave a clean carpet of green behind you as you go. Works on a variety of grass lengths and surfaces. Large capacity hopper is seven cubic feet so you make fewer trips to empty it. Brush height is adjustable. Easy-to-clean, lightweight rust-resistant poly housing, steel tube handle, semi-pneumatic tires and four replaceable brushes. Cleans a 26" wide path.

The new iPods aren't as friendly

It seems the new iPods, including the Nano and the new video IPod, Apple has done away with the top connector. So some of your old accessories won't be compatible any more.

Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator

The HeartStart is the first and only home defibrillator available for adults without a prescription. Keep it on-hand at home, or take it with you when you travel.

Find it FirstStreet. and get a 5% discount.

Nearly 80 percent of all sudden cardiac arrests occur at home. Fewer than 5 percent of those victims survive. When SCA strikes, the heart's electrical system short circuits, causing the heart to quiver rather than pump in a normal rhythm. It typically results in the abnormal rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF). For the best chance of survival, a defibrillator should be used within 5 minutes. Yet, less than 1 in 20 people survive largely because a defibrillator does not arrive in time.

That's why Philips created the HeartStart Home Defibrillator. This award-winning safety equipment has been designed so that virtually anyone can use it to help save a life by treating the most common underlying cause of sudden cardiac arrest. Clear, calm voice instructions talk you through each step. HeartStart senses and adapts the instructions based on your actions. Using sophisticated technology, it quickly decides whether a shock is necessary. It is designed to only allow you to deliver a shock if one is needed. It will even coach you through the steps of CPR.

Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your health. The HeartStart is the first and only home defibrillator available for adults without a prescription. Keep it on-hand at home, or take it with you when you travel. Be prepared today with the HeartStart Home Defibrillator.

Just as seat belts or airbags do not save every life in a traffic accident, a defibrillator will not save every person who suffers sudden cardiac arrest. Yet many lives could be saved if more people could be reached more quickly.

PSP Giga Pack

From IGN
Sony Announces PSP Giga Pack
A PSP and a one gig Memory Stick, complete with all the fixings.
by Anoop Gantayat

October 20, 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment announced today the PSP Giga Pack for worldwide release later this year. The Giga Pack is a bundle that includes the PSP hardware, AC Adapter, standard battery pack, headphones with remote control, pouch, cloth, USB cable and a stand. And the best part: an included one gig Memory Stick.

In Japan, the Giga Pack will be available in two colors: black (PSP-1000 G1) and ceramic white (PSP-1000 G1CW). Both versions will include white headphone/remote sets. The black version of the system will include a black pouch and light gray cloth, with the white version including white versions of both accessories. Pricing for both packs is set at 29,800 yen, or about $270 US.

The PSP is currently available in two forms in Japan: a bare bones standard package and a value package which mirrors the system's US packaging. Both of these packages will continue to be available once the Giga Pack has been released. The Giga Pack is actually a limited edition version of the system designed for the holiday sales rush. Sony expects to have enough stock to last through the start of the new year, with supplies starting to run thin following that.

The Giga Pack will also be made available in North America, Europe and other parts of Asia in November. We'll have details on the US release shortly.

Brought to by:gamefly.com.

In related news, Sony expects to sell between 2.5 million and 3 million PSP this holiday season.

Clear Image Videophone

Unlike previous generations of videophones that cost thousands of dollars and transmitted jerky, delayed, low-resolution images, this videophone uses the latest broadband Internet technology to send clear, real-time images, accurately synchronized with sound, for true-to-life audio and video that’s the next best thing to having the person in the room with you.

Made by Motorola®, the leading provider of two-way radio communications to public safety, government, transportation, and manufacturing organizations for over 75 years, the videophone connects to your broadband cable or DSL modem, making it possible to send and receive video and sound to and from the same kind of videophone at 30 frames per second (by comparison, modern films are show n in theaters at 24 frames per second).

The unique videophone is designed vertically, so that it sits on a desktop at eye level to a caller seated in front of it. A miniature camera is built in to the frame of the high-resolution 7" LCD screen, and the base incorporates a hands-free speaker. Placing a call to another videophone (sold separately) is as simple as touching the talk button and then dialing the number. When the other phone is answered, the screen shows the person on the other end of the call (a sliding lens cap allows you to place or receive calls with the camera off for video privacy if desired).

You can customize the screen to show an inset picture of your face in addition to the image of the person on the other end of the lin e. The phone has still-frame digital picture-based caller ID and phonebook capability. An on-screen interactive menu allows you to easily separate and collate business and personal directories.

Not limited to internet-based video calls, the videophone’s cordless handset can be used to place and receive traditional voice-only calls over a standard phone jack. Requires monthly subscription to videophone service.

15 1/2" H x 9" W x 8 1/4" D. (2 1/2 lbs.)

McDonalds and Nintendo partner

Are you ready for an elevator into space?

"To better understand the concept of a space elevator, think of the game tetherball. In this game, a ball is attached to a pole by way of a rope. Think of the rope as the cable, the pole as Earth and the ball as the weight. Now, imagine that the ball is put into perpetual spin around the pole, so fast that it keeps the rope taut. This is generally how a space elevator would work. The weight at the end of the cable spins around the Earth, keeping the cable taut. The spacecraft would simply ride up the cable as a train rolls over tracks. As the vehicle rides farther up the cable it requires less electrical energy, relying more on the centrifugal force produced by the spinning counterweight to pull it into orbit. By the time the vehicle reaches the end of the cable, it could be moving as fast as 11 kps! At these speeds, a vehicle could detach from the cable and fly off into space at speeds fast enough to reach Mars in days or weeks instead of months."

And yes: People will be able to ride in it.

Studies estimate that the cost of sending payloads into space could be reduced from $20,000 per pound down to $400 per pound.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT), discovered in 1991, are ... 3-5 times as strong as we need them to be, and laboratory measurements of their strength, though very difficult to do and not yet definitive, have shown more than half the strength we need. Carbon nanotubes have the potential to be 100 times stronger than steel and are as flexible as plastic.

Like the space station or space shuttle, the space elevator will need the ability to avoid orbital objects, like debris and satellites. The anchor platform will employ active avoidance to protect the space elevator from such objects. Currently, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracks objects larger than 10 cm (3.9 inches). Protecting the space elevator would require an orbital debris tracking system that could detect objects approximately 1 cm (.39 inches) in size. This technology is currently in development for other space projects.

"Our plans are to anchor the ribbon to a mobile platform in the ocean," said Tom Nugent, of LiftPort. "You can actually move your anchor around to pull the ribbon out of the way of satellites."

I found this at how stuff works. The concept is being worked on by LiftPort Group and several others.

SOCOM 3: US Navy SEALs

SOCOM 3: US Navy Seals is a great addition to the series, and a wonderful fare thee well to playstation 2. There are a lot of new features and improvements over the past:

New features:
# 32 players instead of 16
# vehicles allow you to move faster -- tanks, bradleys, trucks, Humvees, boats
# swimming: You can't fire your gun from in the water, but you can submerge yourself for a limited time, making you all but invisible.
# larger maps (5 to 6 times larger)
# more than 900 weapon combinations
# Returning modes include Breach, Demolition, Suppression, Escort, and Extraction. The new modes are Control and Convoy.
# addition of Encumbrance (weight vs. speed)

The single player is a good primer for the online mayhem, but that's all it is. You can get immersed in the larger settings, but if you want to really have fun, you need to go online and get ready to be fragged by that 12 year old hiding in the corner.

The online experience can be frustrating, but fun if you know what you're doing.
# 32 players drop the framerate
# clan structure is intact, so god bless to the newbies
# Often times you have to deal with the whining and moaning of the punks and generally obnoxious. But you can always ignore them (or just take off the headset).

At the end of the day, if you liked SOCOM 2, you'll love the improvements in SOCOM 3. The multiplayer aspect can be brutal, but is worth the experience. Driving your humvee while your partners take out any and all targets in the area can make for a great ride.

In case you don't want to buy, you can always rent SOCOM 3 at gamefly.com.

Gift for the racing fans

Grand Prix Racing Clock

Press the ON switch, and the cars race around the track! Use the gear shift to speed up or slow down the cars and the racing sound. Clock has tachometer design. This is very cool for those grand prix fans. Probably not so cool for any neighbors (cubes!)

Why is a cell phone called a "cell" phone?

Did you know that cell phones are basically radios?

The carrier divides the city into hexagonal cells, so that each cell has 6 sides. Each cell has a base station consisting of a tower and a small building containing the radio equipment. Since each cell is typically hexagonal, the carrier allows each tower to use only one/seventh of it's alloted frequencies. That way no tower will overlap another's frequencies.

Cell phone carriers typically get about 832 frequencies to use across a city. Since a cell phone is a full-duplex device (one frequency for outbound and one for inbound), there are 395 voice channels per carrier (832/2 = 416. The remaining channels are used for control purposes). So, if we split those channels into seven parts, we get 56. That means only 56 users can be on any analog cell phone at any one time!

If you have a digital service, you can get about 3X as many phones running in each cell. Which is why cities need hundreds of towers, while suburbs can get away with fewer.

Note that sometimes you'll get a busy signal on a cell phone even though the person you are trying to call is not on the phone. It's just the tower's way of saying it doesn't have any available frequencies for you to use (either for you or for the person you are trying to call).

When you move around in the cell, the tower notes that your signal strength is diminishing, while at the same time the tower in a new cell is noticing how your strength is increasing. The two towers communicate through a central switching location which makes the decision to hand you off. Your phone will get a signal to switch frequencies so that the new tower can take over responsibility.

Samsung Markets 3GB Phone

I think the most interesting part of this story from google news is that they won't be looking to market it anywhere but Korea.

The internal storage device of the up-to-date model, SPH-V7900, enables purchasers to carry a couple of high definition video clips or as many as 700 music files.

The high-end gizmo will also be equipped with a 2-megapixel built-in camera and 2X optical zoom, which does not compromise picture quality when zooming in on subjects.

Samsung will retail the SPH-V7900 at around 750,000 won ($718) through KTF, the country’s second-largest wireless operator.

The outfit has no plan to ship the models to other countries since there will be no demand for the top-of-the-line phones other than in Korea, which boasts ubiquitous tech-savvy people.

Street Mouse

The Street Racer optical (800DPI) mouse is lightweight and it's got headlights! Except that it's got tail lights too!! There's quite a lot of vroom vrooming in the office now - and boy do they look great at night.

* Comes with standard right and left click buttons and a clickable scroll button.
* Comes with chrome wheels and tinted windows.
* Always on headlights, and tail lights illuminate when the mouse is moved.

Ultimate Poker Set 500 Chip

Ultimate Poker Set 500 Chip

I've been thinking of running a weekly poker game, but I don't have the right tools to do it with. 500 chips should be about right, along with two deck of cards. The chips are weighted like the casinos. Plus, it comes with an aluminum carrying case with foam interior in the upper lid for added protection. Comes with a lock and key.

Maybe I will do it after all, although I won't be using any cigars (take a close look at the photo).

How Plasma TVs And LCD TVs Differ

How Plasma TVs And LCD TVs Differ
by: Joseph Foley

The buying of large-screen TVs has absolutely skyrocketed lately. It seems that everyone wants one – and with good reason. The large-screen TV has come a long way from those faded-out behemoths of old that took up half your living room and never really produced a picture of decent quality. Now, however, especially in combination with HDTV, you can get not only a nice, large picture, but a crisp, clean one too.

Once you decide that you’re ready for a large-screen TV, you quickly discover that you only really have two main options – a plasma TV or an LCD TV. Plasma TVs were first on the scene, but the recent mass production of LCD TVs by major manufactures has put LCD TVs pretty much on equal footing with plasmas. That said, you will still have to make a choice.

If you’re like most people, you not only have no idea how the two differ, you don’t even know the areas you should be considering in order to determine how they differ. But they do indeed differ, and knowing the difference is extremely important if you’re going to get the TV that’s right for you.

You can essentially boil the differences between plasmas and LCDs into twelve basic points. In some areas, plasmas will win out. In other areas, LCDs will win out. In yet other areas, it will depend on your own personal taste in order to decide who wins out.

The twelve ways plasma TVs and LCD TVs differ are the following:

1. The first is a technical issue, and may seem a little boring, but it really does affect other areas. Plasmas TVs are made of chemical compounds called phosphors. LCD TVs use millions of liquid crystals.

2. The next section is related to how big the TVs are and the availability of larger sizes. You have a wider selection of larger-size TVs with plasmas (though LCDs are catching up).

3. The next section is “small size,” which is also important. Plasmas don't come in smaller sizes, which you will need for places like the kitchen.

4. Next is viewing angle. Plasmas tend to have a wider viewing angle (though, again, LCDs are catching up).

5. Although the manufacturers may not like to admit it, each “can” suffer from certain problems. Plasmas can suffer from burn-in effect; LCDs don't.

6. Another problem area, but for LCDs, is “delay.” LCDs can produce a jagged figure when in motion. Plasmas tend to do better. HDTV improves this dramatically for both.

7. The next area is life span. You can replace the light source with an LCD, thereby bringing your original picture back. With plasmas you can't.

8. In the next few sections, the theme of “picture quality” is considered. First, color: LCDs produce sharp, lively colors. Plasmas produce warmer and more accurate colors.

9. Next is brightness levels and the TVs ability to handle different lighting. LCDs tend to do better in bright-light conditions.

10. Also related to picture quality is “black levels.” Plasmas tend to produce blacker blacks.

11. Another area to consider is contrast range. Plasmas, "technically," produce a higher contrast range.

12. Last, and certainly not least, is price. At the moment, plasmas tend to run a little cheaper, but this is changing rapidly as LCDs flood into the market. By the time you read this, in fact, there may be no difference at all.

Essentially, which one is right for you will all comes down to taste: What potential negatives will you not really notice? What positives do you want more of? What do you really want the TV for – movies, sports, news, regular TV shows? Both plasmas and LCDs have strong advocates in their corners. Both have deliriously happy customers. But those happy customers are only happy because they knew what they wanted before they made their purchase. If you want to make the right choice, you’ll have to decide what it is you want and which of the two TVs can best give you that.
